Art Catwalk – Knysna marks the first Art Catwalk event of its kind in South Africa, introducing a bold and innovative format that places artists themselves at the centre of the spotlight. Designed as a landmark cultural occasion, the event is envisioned as the beginning of an annual platform that could grow to influence the wider South African art scene.
The concept draws inspiration from Kunst in de Kas in the Netherlands — a pioneering initiative that introduced the world’s first “art show on the red carpet.” In this original format, artists stepped out from behind their work and onto the stage, presenting their creations in a live, performative setting rather than a traditional gallery space.
In its inaugural European edition, no fewer than 26 artists, dressed exclusively in black and white, walked the red carpet while showcasing their artworks. Each artist personally introduced and explained their work on stage, creating a powerful connection between creator, artwork, and audience. This approach transformed the exhibition into a living narrative, where art was not only seen, but experienced and understood through the voice of the artist.
It is therefore fitting that the paths of Knysna Arts Society (KAS) and Kunst in de Kas have now converged. Art Catwalk – Knysna brings this internationally proven concept to South African shores for the first time, adapting it to the local creative landscape while preserving its core philosophy: placing artists front and centre as storytellers, performers, and cultural contributors.
Hosted in the refined setting of Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa, the Knysna edition reimagines the runway as a red-carpet gallery, where visual art, fashion-inspired presentation, and live storytelling intersect. The event celebrates both emerging and established artists, fostering dialogue, visibility, and meaningful engagement between creators, collectors, and the wider public.
More than a single evening showcase, Art Catwalk – Knysna represents a new chapter for the Garden Route arts community — one that blends international influence with local talent and sets the foundation for what is hoped to become a signature annual event on South Africa’s cultural calendar.
