In February 2026, Knysna will host a cultural moment unlike anything seen before in South Africa. Art Catwalk – Knysna is set to debut as the first Art Catwalk event in the country, introducing a bold, internationally inspired format that reimagines how art is presented, experienced, and understood.
Hosted at the elegant Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa and presented by the Knysna Arts Society, this event places artists themselves in the spotlight—on a red carpet, in front of a live audience, telling the stories behind their work.
The Art Catwalk concept was pioneered in the Netherlands by Kunst in de Kas, creators of the world’s first “art show on the red carpet.” Instead of artworks hanging quietly on gallery walls, artists stepped forward as performers and storytellers.
In the original European edition, 26 artists, dressed exclusively in black and white, walked the red carpet while presenting their work. Each artist explained their creative process on stage, creating a powerful connection between creator, artwork, and audience. The format challenged traditional gallery norms and transformed the exhibition into a live, human experience.
Now, for the first time, this internationally recognised concept arrives on South African soil—adapted for the Garden Route, but faithful to its core philosophy.
Knysna has long been recognised as a cultural heartbeat of the Garden Route, with a thriving community of visual artists, designers, writers, and performers. The alignment between Knysna Arts Society and Kunst in de Kas feels natural: both champion accessibility, dialogue, and innovation in the arts.
By hosting the event at Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa, Art Catwalk – Knysna adds an additional layer of refinement and gravitas. The venue’s panoramic views and understated luxury provide a striking contrast to the bold, contemporary nature of the artworks presented—making the setting part of the experience rather than just a backdrop.
Despite its name, Art Catwalk is not a fashion show—and it is not a conventional art exhibition either. It sits at the intersection of visual art, performance, storytelling, and presentation.
Guests can expect:
Artists presenting their own work live
A red-carpet format that elevates creators into the spotlight
Insight into artistic inspiration and process
A curated, intimate cultural experience rather than a passive viewing
This approach demystifies contemporary art, inviting audiences to engage directly with artists and their ideas rather than interpreting work in isolation.
Art Catwalk – Knysna is envisioned not as a once-off spectacle, but as the foundation of a potential annual event—one that could grow beyond Knysna and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s evolving arts landscape.
By introducing a proven international format while celebrating local talent, the event positions the Garden Route as a place where cultural innovation can flourish. It also offers artists a rare opportunity: not just to exhibit, but to be seen, heard, and understood.
In an era where creativity often competes for attention, Art Catwalk offers something refreshingly human. It slows the experience down, brings artists forward, and reminds audiences that behind every artwork is a voice, a story, and a lived experience.
For art lovers, collectors, creatives, and culturally curious visitors, Art Catwalk – Knysna stands out as one of the most compelling arts events on the 2026 Garden Route calendar—and a proud first for South Africa.
Art Catwalk – Knysna takes place on 12 February 2026 at Simola Hotel, Country Club & Spa. The event is presented by the Knysna Arts Society.
